The Female Reproductive System

NAME

FUNCTION

VAGINA

Enables sperm to enter during sexual intercourse and forms a passage route for childbirth.

UTERUS

It is in the uterus, also referred to as womb, that fertilisation occurs and the foetus develops during pregnancy.

OVARY

The ovaries produce eggs (ovum) and the hormones Oestrogen and Progesterone.

FALLOPIAN TUBES

When an egg is fertilized by a sperm, known as conception, this normally happens in the fallopian tubes.

VULVA

The term ‘vulva’ refers to all the external genitals of the female. It comprises mons pubis, labia, clitoris, hymen, vaginal orifice, urethral orifice.

PERINEUM

The perineum is a diamond shaped area that contains all the external genitals and anus.
