Female Ovarian & Menstrual Cycles
Unit: Reproductive System

The Female Reproductive Cycle

The female reproductive cycle consists of an ovarian cycle and menstrual (uterine) cycle.

The ovarian cycle is responsible for the development of cells that go on to become fertilised (called secondary oocytes) and the reproduction of hormones, like oestrogen and progesterone. The events in the ovaries that occur during the development of the oocytes can be seen.

The menstrual cycle shows the changes that occur monthly in the endometrium, the mucus lining of the uterus, as it prepares for the development of a fertilised egg or the shedding of an unfertilised egg.

Varying from female to female, the duration of the female reproductive cycle can last between 24 to 36 days.
