Functions of the Blood

Transport

The blood transports essential substances to and from all the cells in the body. These include hormones, electrolytes, nutrients waste products and gases.

Defence

The blood contains specialized cells and chemicals that defend the body against toxins and pathogens.

Clotting

Although usually a liquid, blood has the ability to clot which prevents excessive blood loss if the blood vessel is damaged. The clot also prevents harmful micro-organisms from entering the wound.

Heat temperature Regulator

Blood absorbs heat from warm areas of the body and releases the heat in cooler areas.
